Setup Custom GPT Actions with Smart Connect

Create ChatGPT custom GPT assistants that interact with your local environment using the Smart Connect plugin.

Complete setup enables integration with MCP server tools, Obsidian vaults, or other Smart Actions via Smart Connect.

Alternatively, Smart Connect Official GPTs allow accessing your local environment without creating a Custom GPT. Use Custom GPTs when you seek more control over the system prompt and available actions (for more advanced use cases).

Preparation:

1. Smart Connect: Ensure you have the Smart Connect app installed and connected.
2. ChatGPT Account: Creating Custom GPTs requires a ChatGPT Plus subscription.

Creating Your Custom GPT Assistant

1. Access GPTs in ChatGPT

• On ChatGPT, navigate to the "GPTs" section.
• Click "Create" to start a new Custom GPT.
• Give your GPT a name and description (e.g., "Obsidian Assistant").

2. Optional Conversation Starters

• Add example prompts to guide your GPT's understanding of your needs.

Connecting to Smart Connect

1. Create a New Custom GPT in Smart Connect

• Open the Smart Connect app
• Start a Smart Environment
• Create a new Custom GPT

• A new GPT will appear in the list (e.g., "Custom 1").

Automated actions configuration

Use the automated setup if possible to prevent manually completing the following steps.

2. Import Actions into ChatGPT

• In the ChatGPT Custom GPT editor, click "Add Actions".
• Paste the OpenAPI URL into the "Import from URL" field.

• Click "Import" to load the actions.

3. Set Up Authentication

API Key Setup

• Copy the Local API Key. This can be changed in the Smart Connect window under the Connection tab.
• In your Custom GPT settings, under "Authentication", select "API Key" and "Bearer".
• Paste the Local API Key into the designated field.
  

6. Finalize and Save

• Review the list of available actions and ensure they match those you've selected in Smart Connect.
• Save your Custom GPT configuration.
• Important: copy the GPT URL and paste into the GPT URL input box in Smart Connect.
  • This ensures ChatGPT connects to the correct Custom GPT.
